This stage starts out high along the InterAmericana Highway where the highest point of the trail is reached at Empalme, 2,347 meters (7,670 feet).
Soon thereafter the long descent to the Pacific Ocean begins. Most of this stage traverses one of the finest coffee producing regions in the world. This is mainly a walk on a road that alternates between paved and dirt before ultimately transitioning to a narrow gravel and red soil track. It is nearly always descending and passing numerous resupply opportunities and provides glimpses and open views of the surrounding countryside.
Eventually San Pablo de Leon Cortes is finally reached, the last major town before the end of the trail at Quepos on the Pacific coast. Any final arrangements or needed major purchases or a trip to the ATM should be made here.
Note: Use caution when walking alongside the highway and while walking against the traffic is generally recommended, along this stretch it is advisable to cross over on to the other side of the road due to the extremely limited space to walk on the left side.
